Lack of jobs and increasing taxes were the top concerns by Marion County residents responding to a survey. A total of 5,650 surveys were sent earlier this year to postal customers with Marion County addresses. Of those, 1,409 were return. Results indicate county residents are concerned with too much government and too little opportunity for employment.

Upcoming wedding anniversary celebrations announced in this issue included the 50th anniversary of Rose Olive and Roy Hett and the 70th anniversary of Herb and Clara Bredemeier.

Forty-seven seniors in Marion High School Class of 1999 graduated Sunday at commencement ceremonies. Valedictorians were Maria Voelker, Carrie Darrow, and Bailey Skiles. Each completed their high school career with perfect 4.0 grade point averages. Sarah Crofoot was recognized as salutatorian.

Ed Costello of Marion, who practices law from offices in both Tampa and Marion, was honored June 11 at the awards luncheon of the Kansas Bar Association. Costello was recognized for having practiced law for 50 years.

D and J Shows, the carnival from Chingawassa Days 1997, will make a return engagement this year. The carnival, as well as other rides and games, will start June 4 and run through June 6.
