Marion’s community Christmas program helped about 41 families this year. It provides gifts for those struggling financially during the holiday season. Many children and families requested food and clothing instead of toys. At least $1,500 worth of groceries was provided, organizers said. The number of qualifying families increased from32 in 1997.

A number of county employees received service pins Dec. 14 at the annual employee Christmas dinner. Jim Herzet and Gene Hett received 25-year pins. Others receiving awards were Phil Bowen, 15 years; Suzanne Robinson, Sherry Smith, Diedre Serene, and Ron Johnson, 10 years; and David Funk, Ray Andrews, Ron Boston, and Joe Zinn, five years.

Births announcements include Gregory David, son of David and Sandra Oborny of Marion, born Dec. 16; and Devin Joseph, son of Douglas and Michele Regnier of Marion, born Dec. 18.

Marion High School Swing Singers ended their Christmas concert season Friday with a performance at the regular monthly chamber of commerce meeting. The select vocal group performed both a cappella and with piano accompaniment by Anita Brookens. Joey Smallwood and Shannon Hoffer were soloists.
