Fred Gowan, who for 10 or 12 years has been in the florist business at Peabody, was here last week and decided to move to Marion. He plans to erect a greenhouse as soon as possible and will raise all sorts of plants and vegetables for trade.

Owing to the inability to get satisfactory cooks while regular help are taking vacations, the Elgin dining room has been closed for the month of August.

Curb and gutter and concrete on the new paving being laid from the stone arch bridge to the Tilson corner are about finished. Brick work likely will be done in 10 days.

Today is the 11th consecutive day that the thermometer has gone above 100. It has gone above 100 on 30 days this summer. In 1901, there were 30 or 31 consecutive days that the thermometer went above 100. The last good rain was about the middle of May.

An addition to Mr. and Mrs. Al Richardson’s residence has just been completed. A large bedroom, bathroom, and sleeping porch were added.

The Sunday school baseball season ended last Friday evening when the Presbyterian team won over the Methodists and took the championship with a two-game lead.

The basement of the east side of the Hill School building is being fitted up for the domestic science department.
