City schools opened this week, with an enrollment of 521. Of this number, 357 are in the grades, and 164 are in the high school. Nearly all of the 124 school districts in the county will begin classes this week.
Mr. Hazen, power plant superintendent, expects to have temporary arrangements for lights completed this week. Power will be furnished by the Cottonwood Mill engine. Lights for residences and business houses, but not streetlights, will be furnished under this temporary arrangement.
Emily Holub, daughter of Mrs. Fannie Holub of the Pilsen neighborhood, won a piano in a contest that has been conducted for several months by the Loveless, Pantle, and Hereford stores. Irene Firebaugh finished in second place, and Ida Wittmeyer was third.
Members of the school board and their wives will have a reception for schoolteachers Friday evening at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Siebert. A short program and an informal get-acquainted time are planned,
H.M. Thorp took the O.I.C. girls for a good-time trip Thursday to Wichita. The girls are Corinne Case, Eugenia Corby, Dorothy Loveless, Gladys Hewitt, Virginia Thorp, and Bess Wible.
