The O.A.&W. Election

The most hotly contested election ever held in Marion county occurred last Tuesday, when the people voted upon a proposition to take $150,000 stock in the Omaha, Abilene & Wichita railroad.

Results showed a total of 2,090 voted for the proposition, while 1,798 voted against. The motion carried with a majority vote of 303.

Mr. and Mrs. W.H. Morgan of the Peabody Gazette celebrated the fifth anniversary of their marriage Wednesday night of last week, with a “wooden wedding.” The attendance of friends was large and the list of presents numerous and valuable. The RECORD extends congratulations and wishes them a long extension of marital bliss and prosperity.

W.F. Hoch and family took the eastbound train Tuesday night for the land of paw-paws, persimmons and possums where they will sojourn a few months among “wife’s folks” in the historic village of Perryville.

Our esteemed fellow citizen, Levi Billings, reached his fiftieth birthday election day. He said he wouldn’t accept any birthday present less than a railroad.

The enterprising people of Wilson township had a supper at the Whipple schoolhouse one night last week to raise funds with which to fence and ornament their cemetery.

The RECORD was so absorbed in railroad matters last week that it failed to make fitting mention of the purchase of the S.F. Carter hardware establishment by Mr. James Stanford and his son W.A. of Florence. The new firm took possession last week, and the business is running along as smoothly as if no change had occurred. The name of the firm will be Stanford & Son.
