Out and In

The first part of the year is generally attended by some changes in the personnel of the corps of county officials. This time, however, but two county officers, proper, make room for successors. On Monday, Mr. Eby surrendered the Register’s office to Mr. Fred L. Frazer, and Mr. W.H. Hamilton “turned over” the County Clerk’s office to Mr. E.S. Walton.

Mr. Hamilton will remain awhile with Mr. Walton, as assistant. Mr. James Hamilton succeeds Mr. Frazer, as assistant in the Treasurer’s office. No change occurs in the subordinate force of the Register’s office, Mr. Brown Corby retaining his position.

State Superintendent Lawhead has just completed a table giving the school population of Kansas by counties. Marion county’s population is listed as 6,502.

We are not exactly in the prophecy business, but then we want to record a prediction, right here at the beginning of the year 1886. We want to predict that the amount of money invested in new building in Marion, this year, will “crowd” $150,000. Now remember this.

Marion is on the threshold of the most prosperous year in its history. There is no doubt about that. Let every citizen feel it incumbent upon him to do something to help along the boom.

The boys have had fine fun sliding down the school house hill. It beats sliding down cellar doors by a large majority.

We can already count ten stone business buildings that are almost sure to be erected on Main street, in Marion, this year, and we hear of others that are pretty certain to be erected. Ah, we’re going to boom, and don’t you forget it.

Mr. J.R. Roberts, of the upper Luta, warmed his shins by our fire a good while Tuesday.

Reports of loss of stock by the late storm begin to come in. W.W. Brewer lost three head of cattle; Dr. Hannaford two head, and others whose names we do not now recall, also lost cattle. But the greatest loss appears to have been in hogs.

Marshal Brown requests us to give fair warning to everybody interested that dogs failing to “show up” with tax tag will be killed.

Old winter has held on this week with a firm grip.
