“The poor you have always with you.” Readers, you especially who have been blessed with more of earth’s treasures than are necessary for your comfort as the cold blasts of winter beat harmlessly ’gainst your happy homes, remember those less fortunate human beings all around you, to whom winter brings only sadness and suffering.
Quite a sprinkling of prairie schooners are passing through these days from the west, going back east to wives’ folks.
The Ladies Aid Society is preparing for a big time Thanksgiving day two weeks from yesterday. They propose to set a fine dinner at noon and at night an oyster supper. At night, also, they will offer for sale a large number of useful and ornamental articles, specimens of their own handiwork. Bear all this in mind.
A large load of fine, large hickory nuts from Lynn County were on the streets Saturday, retailing at $1 per bushel.
The new Evangelical church in Gale Township was formally dedicated last Sunday to the worship of God. A large number of citizens of Marion Centre were in attendance. The church is a handsome stone structure, neatly finished and furnished with pews, organ, pulpit, sofa, chandelier, etc.
We have seen a specimen of coal said to have been taken from a newly discovered mine on Diamond Creek about 25 miles from Marion Centre. It is said to have been found cropping out for about 200 feet around a hillside, in a vein 20-odd inches thick. The specimen shown us was a very good quality of coal.
