Treated city water in Hillsboro, Marion, and Peabody is safe to drink, but officials are warning residents and visitors not to let pets or people drink untreated water from Marion Reservoir. Three dogs died this past weekend from a pathogen consistent with blue-green algae that, at times, has been prevalent at the reservoir.

After a 20-minute executive session, Marion City Council approved, 5-0, the hiring of deputy sheriff and former Marion police officer Josh Whitwell as chief of police.

Outstanding employee at St. Luke Hospital during the third quarter is Cheryl Connell, who has been employed as ward clerk for 18 years.

The former Social and Rehabilitation Services building at Main and Cedar Sts. will be opened soon as a sporting goods store and day-care center. Pam and Vincent Magellanes will operate the sporting goods center. Their daughter-in-law, Shawn Nguyen-Escalanta, is obtaining certification to operate the child-care center.

Shirley Bowers is pictured with a 9½-pound cabbage she harvested from her garden. Her friends tease her saying it would make a lot of bierocks.

Marion City Library will sponsor a Harry Potter party at 10 a.m. July 21 at the library.
