Some of rural northern Marion County got an early Christmas present this week in the form of something simple: electricity. Even with progress that has been made, some Marion County residents won’t have electricity by Christmas.

A kerosene lamp was blamed for a house fire Dec. 12 that destroyed a house at Aulne. The area was without electricity at that time because of an ice storm. The lamp was being used to light the home.

Local hairdresser and Marion County resident Amy Gillett is pictured showing three of her Precious Moments figurines depicting hairdressers. Gillett has Christmas trees in her shop, Unique Designs, in downtown Marion and at her home that are adorned with Precious Moments ornaments. She has more than 600 pieces in her collection.

The public is invited to meet on the Marion City Library lawn at 11:45 p.m. New Year’s Eve for the 2008 New Year’s Eve ball drop at midnight.

Marion Elementary School December students of the month are Jacob Baldwin, Sydnee Baldwin, Grif Case, Katelyn Christensen, Erika Hess, Zac Lewman, Timothy Knolla, Taylor May, Cassie Meyer, Grace Neal, Bryce Shults, Emma Spachek, Jacob Vondenkamp, Logan Waner, Jacob Whitwell, Betsy Williams, and Larry Ziemmermann,
