Giant pumpkins are this week’s entry in the Marion County Record Produce Derby. Jason, 10, and Jeremy, 6, sons of Mr. and Mrs. Steve May, planted a package of seeds given them by their great-grandmother, Mrs. Herman Janzen. One plant, grown at their grandparents’ home east of Marion (Mr. and Mrs. Dean Duke), produced four whoppers. The smaller two weighed 25 pounds each and the larger pumpkins tipped the scales at 50 pounds each.

Nancy Swartz, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Pat Swartz, was crowned Homecoming queen Friday night during halftime ceremonies at the Marion Centre Football game. She was escorted by Mike Kelsey. Her attendants were Sherri Winkler and Cheryl Stoltenberg. Winkler’s escort was Jeff Harper and Stoltenberg’s escort was Chris Webb.

Bob Hoch, a native of Marion, has been credited by the Wichita Eagle-Beacon as the one who developed that newspaper’s state-of-the-art electronic library. Hoch is the son of Nadine Hoch of Marion.
