Marion County Commissioners opened bids Monday and bought two new cars—one for the sheriff’s department and one for the county engineer. Marion Motor Center was awarded low bid on the sheriff’s car and Dean Schroeder Motor Co. had the low bid on the engineer’s car.

A sampler quilt, sewn by members of Tampa’s Extension Homemakers Unit, will be given away Aug. 10 as part of the festivities during the second annual Harvest Hog Roast and street dance sponsored by Tampa State Bank in Tampa.

Taxpayers in Marion will be pleased when they read the proposed city budget published this week. It calls for a lowered mill levy next year.

Births announced in this issue include Megan Anne, daughter of Stan and Joanne Vogel of Hillsboro, born July 23 and Jordan Elling Hague, son of Mr. and Mrs. Donald Hague of Peabody, born July 28.

Bethel School, Marion County District 8, still stands beside the road 5½ miles east of Lincolnville. Though the building no longer serves as a school, former students and neighbors will observe the district’s centennial in September. Dr. Nancy Groneman of Emporia is chairman of the special observance.

The Kansas Waterwell Association’s annual family picnic was held Saturday and Sunday at Marion Reservoir.
