The 40th anniversary of V-J Day (Victory over Japan) brought a capacity crowd of 260 World War II veterans, spouses, and widows together the evening of Aug. 14. They enjoyed a hog roast dinner, with the pork prepared by Mr. and Mrs. Garry Vogel, at the VFW Post. Ed Costello was general chairman of the event that included a short patriotic program.
Mary Kay Waner and Dr. David L. Holland Jr. were married July 27 at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church, Wichita.
August rain and cool evenings are a boon to farmers and others. Farmers are watching their row crop grow, making up somewhat for the sub-normal prices. And, the rest of the folks are relishing lower utility bills. That meter doesn’t spin so fast when the air conditioning isn’t needed.
Roger W. Hannaford of Marion has been elected vice president of the Kansas Land Title Association. He was selected at the 78th annual convention of that organization held Aug. 10.
Glen Hill of Steeplejack Service, Des Moines, Iowa, took about a half-hour Monday to paint the 60-foot tall flagpole in front of Marion County Courthouse. The pole got a coat of spanking new silver, with a gold ball on the top.
Young Jerod Shipman, Florence, takes tomato honors this week in the Marion County Record Produce Derby. His big red ripe beauty tipped the scales at 1 pound 14 ounces.
