Farmers in Marion County are harvesting wheat early this year but some face the dismal prospects of lower yields and lower prices. Moisture at the wrong times, high winds, and plant diseases have combined to reduce the grain heads, according to agricultural experts. The first loads of wheat were brought into local elevators on June 11.
Thomas Jasper and Mahala Fordyce Sampson settled on a homestead five miles east of Lincolnville in 1869. Their descendants held their annual reunion June 8 in Lincolnville. Forty-two family members registered.
Amy JoAnn Tollefson of Topeka and Douglas Willard Kjellin were married May 31 at the Free Methodist Church in McPherson.
Kelley Enos, a 1986 Marion High School graduate, has won the $900 Catherine Riddle Scholarship. The scholarship is awarded each year to two graduating seniors, one from Marion and one from Abilene.
A one-drawer cash box was the only item missing when cat burglars scaled into Marion Municipal Swimming Pool Friday night. Police Chief Bob Hoffman reported the thieves climbed a fence, scaled a wall, and dropped through an opening in the roof into the ladies’ shower to get into the pool office. They then knocked a hole through a door.
Robin Summervill and Charlotte Thies arrived home late Friday after spending five days in Lindsay, Okla., at the All Star Girls’ Basketball Camp.
