Three locomotive engines and 41 freight cars derailed early Saturday morning north of Durham after high water had washed out some of the track bed. Two crewmen were injured and about a dozen semi-trailer loads of grocery items and various unlisted goods were demolished, spewing cases of Meaty Bone dog biscuits and tomato sauce all over the wreck site.

Bill Nelsen met with Marion City Commissioners Monday afternoon to seek support for establishing a youth center in the old Santa Fe depot.

Marion High School girls recently selected as cheerleaders for the MHS 1985-86 football season are Stephanie Summerville, Cerece Smith, Michelle Foth, Mary Margaret Mills, and Jennifer Stinchcomb. Basketball cheerleaders will be Carol Laue, Stephanie Summerville, Tiffany Johnson, Michelle Foth, Mary Margaret Mills, Stacey Long, Jo Shepek, Tina Miller, Tracey Long, and Jill Dannenfelser.

Dr. Ron Slaymaker, head basketball coach at Emporia State University, has been secured to speak May 16 at the Marion High School Athletic Banquet.

Postmaster Larry Gultz says mail carriers are having problems with loose dogs. Carriers will bypass homes where a dog presents a threat.
