A new era began Monday morning when KDOT workers installed new K-256 signs, replacing U.S.-56 markers along Main Street in Marion. When the new highway opened and traffic rerouted around town, insurance agent Alex Case said he “waved at the last cattle truck. An old era has passed, and a new one has begun.”

Incumbent sheriff Edward Davies and incumbent county clerk Marquetta Eilerts scored impressive wins over their opponents in this week’s primary election. Each will face no opposition in the general election unless someone stages a write-in campaign.

Holly Kleinschmidt has been selected as queen of the 40th annual Tri-County Fair at Herington. She is the daughter of Bob and Arlene Kleinschmidt of Lincolnville and a student at Centre High School.

This week’s featured entrant in the Produce Derby is Mrs. Raymond Kraus, Marion. She is pictured showing some of her prize Kenneback potatoes. The largest weighed 1 pound 6 ounces. Total weight of all eight was 6¾ pounds.

Three-year-old James Bina won his division Sunday in the Baby Beauty Contest, part of the Tri-Rivers Fair in Salina. His older brother and sister, Chuck and Nikki, have both won the event as well. They are the children of Ray and Denice Bina, Lincolnville.
