Bruce Padgham and Leland Heidebrecht are pictured weighing fish Sunday at the 18th annual Marion Fishing Derby. Sunday’s 106 entrants tied last year’s attendance record in spite of storms and cloudy weather.

A dance featuring classic rock was deemed a success by Marion Chamber of Commerce organizers. Held Saturday night, the dance raised between $400-$500 after expenses.

Candy Plett of Lincolnville was selected as Kansas Hereford Princess recently during the field day at Abilene. She is pictured with Patricia Lane of Drexel, Mo., Kansas Hereford Queen. The girls will represent the state Hereford industry at state and national events during the upcoming year.

Amy Lynn Hett, daughter of Keith and Maryann Conyers, Marion, enlisted June 6 in the United States Air Force. A 1988 graduate of Marion High School, Hett has departed for Lackland AFB, Texas, for six weeks of basic military training.

The days of the pioneers returned to Marion County this week. Members of the Santa Fe Trail Association set out Tuesday to ride the actual trail, viewing the old ruts still visible near Durham. The six-day trip cut across Kansas with members sleeping in tents or mobile homes along the way.

June 24 has been declared a Kiwanis work day for construction of the nature trail in Central Park.
