Marion City Commission learned that the bell in the belfry at Marion Historical Museum has slipped and needs to be removed and the roof is leaking. They also considered fixing the underground sprinkler system at East Park and installing an underground watering system in Central Park.

Sheila Rae Makovec was the first baby of 1991 born at St. Luke Hospital. The daughter of Gail and Marissa (Kukuk) Makovec of Ramona, Shelia Rae made her initial appearance at 8:04 p.m. Jan. 4.

An open house is planned Friday at the new quarters of the Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service and Marion County Conservation District offices at 303 Eisenhower Drive, Marion.

Bruce Rhodes of Marion has received a Master of Science degree in biology from Emporia State University. He has taught biology and chemistry at Marion High School since 1983.

Trees to the east of St. Luke Hospital in Marion are decorated with 10 yellow ribbons to remind people passing by of those in the armed services or Middle East. The ribbons honor Brenda Thrasher, surgical nurse at the hospital and naval reservist, who was called up for active duty in early January. Relatives of hospital employees also are being honored for their service to the country.
