The names of three attorneys, two from Marion and one from Council Grove, have been submitted to Gov. Joan Finney for her selection of a new Eighth District judge. Ed Wheeler and Bob Brookens, both of Marion, and Council Grove attorney Mike Powers were nominated Friday from among seven candidates. The governor has 30 days to appoint a nominee.

Linda Loney, M.D., daughter of Leona Loney of Pilsen, has accepted the position of assistant in medicine at Boston Children’s Hospital. She is a staff member and coordinator of birth defect services at the hospital. She also is an instructor in pediatrics at Harvard University Medical School.

Stephanie Burkholder has been selected as Student of the Month by the Marion High School faculty. A senior, she is the daughter of Larry and Carol Burkholder of Marion.

Cassandra Kay Clemmer (Cassie) of rural Lincolnville has been chosen as the 1991 Poster Child for the Arthritis Foundation, Kansas Chapter. Cassie, five, is the daughter of Dale and Sandy Clemmer.

Marion resident Norma Hannaford recently received a letter from First Lady Barbara Bush in response to Hannaford’s tongue-in-cheek letter asking her to do something about her husband’s sometimes-salty language and threatening to go to Washington to “wash his mouth out with soap.”
