The city is applying for a Community Development Block Grant to the maximum amount of $400,000. The purpose is to construct a large storm shelter for residents of Marion Manor, Hilltop Manor, September I and II, and Marion Elementary School. All five facilities are located within a block of the proposed construction site.

Ken Vinduska, administrator at Marion Manor, is pictured as he examines the granite marker of Walter Rogers, a resident who died Jan. 30. With no known family, Rogers’ grave at Marion Cemetery would have remained unmarked had it not been for $315 in voluntary donations from local community members. The stone carries the message “You Are Remembered.” Rogers was best known as half of the “Walter and Delia” couple who walked downtown from Marion Manor each day for many years.

Phyllis Melton and Jerry Heath returned last week from a trip to visit relatives in Ohio and to attend an Elderhostel in Kentucky.
