More than 200 booths are expected to be set up in Central Park Saturday for the 17th annual Art in the Park, sponsored by Marion Chamber of Commerce.

The event is coordinated for the same date as the annual Arts and Crafts Festival at Hillsboro.

The two events bring thousands of people to Marion County each September.

The “Last Member Club” of the 1927 graduating class of Marion High School met Saturday at the Stone City Café for their 68th year reunion. Eight members of the Class of 1927 were present plus two spouses.

Sixty-three women played in a 9-hole golf tournament Sept. 7 at Marion Country Club. Winner in the championship flight was Elora Robinson of Marion, who was the scratch winner and medalist of the tournament.

The exterior of the new police office, attached to the city fire department, is up. Interior work remains to be completed with volunteers providing some of the labor.

As Sacred Heart High School football team learned Friday, one of the reasons the Warriors are ranked second in the state is their powerful defense. The Knights were held to negative yards in Marion’s first home game Friday, a 54-7 win.

Ira Newcomer, 92, died Sept. 7 at St. Luke Hospital. “Newt” as he was known by a wide circle of friends and business associates, served four terms as mayor of Marion, from 1953 to 1964. During those years, sweeping and progressive changes were made in the city government.
