JoAnn Knak, director of Emergency Medical Services, presented her report and proposed budget Monday at the county commission meeting. She reports there were 74 ambulance calls. Marion crews made 27 of them, Peabody 24, Hillsboro 20, and Peabody three. EMS service has 90 volunteers in Marion County to cover the 970 square miles and look after 13,500 people.

Marion Kiwanis Club entered record books of Kiwanis International Monday when president Susan Robson gave birth to son Zachary. Longtime Kiwanian Bud Hannaford said his research indicates this is the first time a club president has given birth to a child while in office.

Nationally renowned jazz trumpeter Mike Steinel will be the featured guest artist at Emporia State University’s fifth annual gala benefit concert on Oct. 5. Associate professor of jazz at the University of North Texas, he is the son of former residents, Conrad and Lois Steinel, and a graduate of Marion High School.

Marion Mini Mall at 901 E. Main will celebrate its second anniversary July 14 and invites the public to come see its new look. The event promises a free gift for everyone, door prizes, and refreshments.

There are three Republican candidates and one Democrat filed for the Third District position on the Marion County Commission. Republican primary candidates are Jack Bruner, Marquetta Eilerts, and Gary Jones. Democratic candidate is Maurice Cordell.
