A reference to a brief but memorable piece of Marion history has been selected as the name for a town-wide festival to be held next summer. “Chingawassa Days” was selected from 32 suggested names.

In pre-game ceremonies Friday, Josh Plett and Wendy Rudolph were crowned Centre High School homecoming king and queen. Centre won the game using a 41-point first half to overwhelm Wakefield 61-14.

An open house was held Sept. 22 at Hilltop Manor to celebrate its 25th year. Tours were conducted by Marion Housing Authority board members Robert Hoover, Raymond Vinduska, Homer Stiller, Charles Heerey, and Bud Pierce. They were assisted by Shirley Carlson, executive director, and David Bowers, maintenance man.

Marion High School homecoming is set for Friday at halftime of the varsity football game against Remington. Homecoming candidates are Mandy Hansen, Gabrielle Longhofer, Lisa Zogelman, Shawn Markley, Chris Bowers, and Jeremy May.

Kathleen Bernhardt, office manager for the Marion area Kansas Department of Transportation, has been honored for 30 years service to the department.

Marion High School junior Nathan Collett has been selected student of the month by the faculty. He is the son of Mark and Mickey Collett.

Crys Commerford and her first grade class at Marion Elementary School accepted a $10,000 check Thursday from Heartland Wireless manager Ken Murlin. The check represents royalty payments for microwave channels leased from the school district. Peabody and Hillsboro districts will receive similar checks for microwave frequencies which the federal government had assigned to schools.
