Marion Chamber of Commerce retail sales committee is preparing for the Christmas shopping season.

Longtime Marion County Appraiser Max Hayen will resign effective Dec. 23. Hayen has been with the county since 1969 when he was hired as a deputy appraiser. He has been head appraiser since 1973.

Mary Brownback, wife of Senate candidate Sam Brownback, was in Marion Monday to greet voters. Mrs. Brownback’s grandfather, Oscar Stauffer, is a former owner of the Peabody Gazette newspaper.

Marion Warriors continued their recent domination of the Herington Railers and trampled them Friday, 47-7. The Warriors wanted to work on their passing, and they did. Shaun Craft was 8 of 14, passing for 178 yards with no interceptions and two touchdowns, one by Scott Hannaford, the other by Noah King.

Two fatality accidents occurred in the county this week. Jeff Pankratz, 26, Goessel, died Oct. 16 when a right front tire blew out on the 1976 Ford concrete mixing truck he was driving on US-77 north of the K-150 junction. The truck overturned and he was thrown from the vehicle.

Jerry J. Jones, 24, of Golden, Colorado, a senior Tabor College football player, died Sunday in a one-vehicle accident two miles east of Hillsboro on 190th. Jones and two others were occupants of a 1985 Nissan pickup. The pickup left the roadway and Jones was ejected when the vehicle struck an embankment.

Centre Junior High instructors have chosen 13-year-old Greg Klenda as “student of the month.” The eighth grader is the son of Val and Julie Klenda who live northwest of Lincolnville.
