Curbside recycling in Marion is being replaced by drop-off recycling. In a recent survey by Marion City Commission, a large majority favored a drop-off site instead of continued curbside recycling at increased rates of $9 to $13 per month. To continue with curbside the city would need to adjust rates.

A listing of major Marion Chamber of Commerce accomplishments during 1996 is too long for inclusion. A small portion includes: the delivery of 74 Welcome-to-Marion bags to new families, providing members with access to affordable group health insurance coverage, hosting tour groups, sponsoring workshops, recognizing new businesses, and the promotion of local craft shows, along with many other activities and promotions benefitting the town.

Marion High School faculty members have named senior Katie Barta-Moran as student of the month. She has been a member of the MHS band, Swing Singers, National Honor Society, school musical, forensics, was in cross country for three years, and was a class secretary.

Signs with road names and numbers will be ordered soon, sign foreman Dennis Maggard, dispatcher Shelly Abbott-Becker, and appraiser Max Hayen reported at the Marion County Commission meeting. They will be reflective green with reflective white letters.

Marion Highway School basketball boys picked up an impressive win Saturday at the Hillsboro tournament defeating Belle Plaines 55-51 in overtime. Jesse Versch was top scorer with 12 points, followed by Dusty Sharp with 11, and Scott Hannaford with 10.

Mark Rathert is featured this week in the series of articles about young people from Marion who have made good in their chosen fields.

Mark grew up in Marion, graduated from Marion High School and learned about golf while dragging the sand greens at Marion Country Club.

He now heads
Rathert International Golf Design, Inc., at Englewood, Colorado, and has designed some of the finest gold courses in the world.
