The public is invited to an open house farewell party on the main floor of the courthouse from 2 to 4 p.m. March 20 honoring Max Hayen upon his retirement as Marion County Appraiser for Marion County since 1969.

Greg and Mitch Carlson have been busy this week moving their Carlsons’ Grocery across the street to newer and larger quarters in the former Town and County Market building. All services will remain as before, including bakery, deli, and video departments.

Marion Chamber of Commerce members presented a welcome plaque at a ribbon cutting at Casey’s General Store in Marion. The newest convenience store in Marion held its grand opening this past weekend.

Marion High School’s varsity Scholar’s Bowl team dominated the Cottonwood Valley League meet Feb. 27 at Council Grove, posting a perfect 5-0 record to win the championship.

Team members were seniors Chris Bowers and Eliza Bennett, junior Nathan Collett, and freshman Mandalee Meisner. Bennett was top scorer with 110 points, followed by Collett with 80.

Aimee Goossen of Hillsboro shows the proclamation recognizing the Chisholm Trail’s 130th anniversary this year. Riders carried the proclamation from Abilene to Caldwell, where it was added to similar certificates from the governors of Texas and Oklahoma. The trail passed along the west edge of Marion County.

Edson and Naomi Childs have lived in Marion most of their married years. They have lived at Hilltop Manor for nearly four years and are recognized this week as the current “residents of the month” at the retirement complex.

Art Jantz of Hillsboro, former partner in Quality Food Market in Marion, and his son, Bob, will display a collection of cast-iron sausage-making equipment and demonstrate sausage-making Saturday at the Hillsboro Smoked Sausage Festival on the Tabor College campus.
