Preparations are in the final stages for Marion’s fourth annual Art in the Park. The event is scheduled for Saturday in Central Park.

Interested citizens and county law enforcement officers are preparing to ask city councils throughout the county for volunteers to serve on the board of directors for the proposed Crimestoppers program.

Kim Schaffer, a 19-year-old resident of Florence and a student at Friends University, along with another Friends student, will spend three months in Haiti this year. They will be met by Quaker missionaries who will drive them to a mission at Bombarde where they will live with the missionaries and work in a hospital and orphanage.

Kim Buethe, a senior at Centre High School, reigned as the 1983 Tri-County Fair Queen Thursday through Saturday at the Tri- County Fair in Herington. Buethe is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Donald Buethe of Lincolnville.

Residents of Eastshore gathered Saturday evening to learn how to fight a fire in their area before fire equipment arrives from Marion. Wilbur Short, a retired United States Air Force fire chief, explained many of the basics of fire fighting. Although residents hope there will never be a need for their fire response training, they feel being prepared may someday save the life of a friend or neighbor.
