Pictured on the front page of this issue is a prize winning 13-foot cornstalk grown by Denise Sellers of rural Florence. Sellers and her father, Robert, worked all summer to cultivate the plants into gigantic size. Denise is one of seven finalists in the state competing in a Corn Nuts growing contest for the tallest Corn Nuts stalk.

The Kansas Selective Service has issued a reminder to all area youth of the federal law requiring them to register for possible military service. The registration program, conducted with the cooperation of the U.S. Postal Service, was initiated in 1980 as a means of logging those eligible for military service in the event of emergency.

Following a picnic Thursday evening with the American Legion Auxiliary in Central Park, members of James William Miesse American Legion Post met at the post home to elect officers for the coming year. Roger Morse was re-elected commander; Bud Hannaford, vice commander; Alex Case, adjutant; Rosse Case, historian; Leland Heidebrecht, finance officer; Leroy Riggs, service officer; Claudine Hunt and Larry Kerns, sergeants-at-arms.

Cheerleaders at Florence Elementary School this year are Dena Connell, Mary Mills, Stephanie Summerville, Michelle Ellis, Amy Hett, and Lori Lalouette.

The class of 1933 will observe its golden anniversary this week, marking 50 years since members graduated from Marion High School. Of the 36 graduates, 31 are alive today and 20 will be in Marion for the reunion.
