For the third year, the 10-K run around the scenic hills of the county lake opened this year’s Old Settlers’ Day festivities. Race officials said more than 180 persons registered for the 10-K and two mile runs. Evan Yoder of Peabody crossed the finish ahead of the pack with a time just over 32 minutes. Steve Bryant of Marion finished as winner of the two-mile run. His time of 10:50 was more than 2 seconds faster than his nearest competitor.
Widely known Marion businessman, farmer, and livestock man, Tom Hett, died Friday following several months of extended illness.
Among classes holding reunions on Old Settlers’ Day were the Class of 1928 (55 years), the Class of 1938 (45 years), and the Class of 1943 (40 years).
More than 20 persons representing nine Marion County communities attended the Crimestoppers organizational meeting held Thursday at Kingfisher’s Inn at the Marion County Lake.
Doug Kjellin, son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Kjellin of Marion, has been selected as a member of the Central College concert choir at McPherson. A freshman, he will sing bass.
J. L. “Les” Fruechting has been elected president of Marion Builders, an organization of senior citizens. He succeeds Dave Blackim who has been president for the past two years.
Richard Britain of Marion has been selected by the Postal Service to train for the position of postal inspector. Britain graduated from Washburn University at Topeka with a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice. He also has served on the Marion Police Department. More recently, he has been employed as a city carrier at Marion Post Office.
