Marion Duckwall’s manager Janie Meierhoff presented checks for $260 each to Elora Robinson and Bob Brookens, representing Marion Boy and Girl Scouts. The money came from a “cutest baby” contest at the store. Winning baby was 12-week-old Janessa Tammen, granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. Dennis Maddox of Elmdale.

Jim Lehrer’s newest fiction novel, “A Bus of My Own,” is now available at Marion City Library. Lehrer lived in Marion in the mid-1940s while his parents operated an area bus line.

Marion Police Department this week commended Kevin Weigart, 8; Daniel Bryant, 12; and Matt Bryant, 10, for their lifesaving attempt when they found 72-year-old Glenn Matthews, who collapsed Nov. 8 while walking his dog near 1st and Burbridge Sts. in Marion.

Mary Yates of Durham was one of the grand prize winners in the Heinz Home-style Gravy “Cooking in Style” contest. Boxes filled with a complete Cuisinart kitchen arrived at the Yates home, and Henry Haller, retired White House executive chef, spent Friday at the Yates home preparing a White House dinner.

Jim Hoy, professor of English at Emporia State University, will speak at the annual Marion Chamber of Commerce farmer appreciation dinner at 6 p.m. Monday. The steak dinner expresses appreciation for all the business that area farmers and ranchers do in Marion.
