Bruce Skiles, a certified registered nurse anesthetist, started work Jan. 18 at St. Luke Hospital. Skiles, also a doctor of chiropractic medicine, plans to open an office in St. Luke Medical Clinic later this year.

Sears announced Monday that because it was discontinuing its catalog sales business, the Sears Catalog Store in Marion would close. Margaret Harris, owner of the Marion store, said the “bombshell” announcement took her “completely by surprise.”

Traci Helmer, daughter of Laddie and Luci Helmer of rural Marion, has graduated from basic training at Lackland Air Force Base, Texas. She is in the Kansas Air National Guard and is a 1990 graduate of Marion High School.

Senior Kristine Bateman has been selected as student of the month by the Marion High School faculty. She plans to pursue collegiate studies in psychology or art therapy. Her parents are Jeannine and R.J. Bateman of Marion.

A reunion for survivors of orphan trains that brought small children to Kansas will be April 24 in Salina. This will be the first gathering of orphan train riders. By 1910, the Children’s Aid Society had delivered 4,150 children to Kansas residents. Adoptions continued until 1929.

Students scheduled to perform in a piano recital Feb. 4 in the high school music room include Jessica Ash, Elly Barta-Moran, Katrina Hancock, Jenny Hanson, LeAnn Hiebert, Pam Kruse, and Tammy Winter.
