Marion County Lake residents earned first and second place in the annual Marion Chamber of Commerce Christmas lighting contest.

Gordon and Judy Pendergraft, 2 Random Rd. earned first place. Walt and Betty Norman, 72 Lakeshore Dr., placed second. Martin and Helen Jantz, 234 Thorp St. in Marion, were third.

After almost 40 years with Scully Estates, Forrest Smith will retire Dec. 31. A reception from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. is planned at the Scully office at 114 S. Freeborn St. in Marion.

The Buckley sisters, Lucille Bell and Ruth Hiebert, who have spent the major portion of their lives working in the food store their father, E.J. Buckley, began in downtown Marion in 1922, are the subjects of Amy Smith’s weekly article, “They make a difference.”

Dear Santa:

Please bring me a Talk and Play fire truck or a Loopin’ Louie. My brother Calvin wants a police motorcycle with a guy or an ambulance that talks.

We will leave you milk and cookies and a bowl of water for your reindeer.

Thanks for the gifts you sent last year. Oh, yeah, we have been pretty good this year also.

Marion County Improvement District No. 2 is again seeking a $400,000 community development block grant to provide treated water to Marion County Lake area residents.
