An article by summer intern Brendan Sager features Rachel Koehn, who opened Burns Café and Bakery last month. Pictured are Koehn and her staff of all-Mennonite women, “who serve heaps of good old American food.”

Luci Helmer and Sharon Kelsey, both of Marion, are the first to receive associate degrees by attending all their classes at Marion. They graduated with honors from Butler County Community College but took all their classes at Butler of Marion.

Area residents toured the Binney and Smith Crayola factory in Winfield and the Chaplin Nature Center in Arkansas City on a trip June 1 sponsored by the Marion-Florence Recreation Commission.

Participants were Margo and Michael Yates, JoAnna McGinness, Scott Nuss, Ann and Andy Holt, Shayla Steele, Lavonne and Jill Hannaford, Margaret and Ashlee Pickering, and Belinda Skiles.

A feature article tells of Marion’s Charles Victor Faust (1880-1915), who was a major league off-the-field legend as a lucky charm for the New York Giants, winners of the 1911 National League championship. Faust is in the Encyclopedia of Baseball even though he pitched only two innings and had two hits, a 0-0 record, and an earned-run average of 4.5. He was signed by the Giants after presenting himself as a fortune teller.
