The Kansas Highway Commission this week announced another public hearing and two prehearing informational meetings will be held on proposed changes in regard to U.S.-56 from Marion to Hillsboro.

A near catastrophe was recorded at the Luta Creek bridge on Marion’s Main Street Wednesday when a semi-trailer gasoline transport belonging to Pierce Oil Company lost its rear wheels smack-dab in the middle of the bridge. The loaded transport could have caused an inferno, but sparks did not ignite the fuel. The fuel was transferred to another truck and the bridge was re-opened to traffic.

Genial Gerry Harris, Marion’s favorite master of ceremonies, presided at the Christmas opening free entertainment Friday night when bonus gift certificates were awarded. Mrs. Edith Swehla claimed the $25 award. Other winners were Roberta Slifer, Jim Fruechting and Adah Fruechting $5 each and Verna Propp $10.
