At the end of her concert and personal message of life as Miss America, Debbie Barnes Miles was given a standing ovation by an appreciative audience Saturday evening. This was the final event of this year’s Old Settlers’ Day in Marion.
The produce derby front-runner this week is a sweet potato grown by Mr. and Mrs. Lewie Griffith of Marion County Lake. The sweet spud weighted 3 pounds 7 ounces and was their first attempt at planting them at their lake home.
Martin Tice, principal of Marion High School, was installed as president of the Marion Kiwanis Club at noon Monday.
Fourth graders from both Marion and Florence were again treated to a day at the circus Sunday when area Shriners paid for their admission at the Isis Shrine Circus in Salina. The kids were transported in a school bus driven by Mrs. Don Rittgers.
Those attractive trashcans along Marion’s Main Street, all painted in patriotic Bicentennial colors and theme, are the work of Les Byers’ art classes at Marion High School.
A breakfast golf tournament will be held at 9 a.m. Sunday at Marion Country Club. Golf will follow breakfast. One of the committee members, thinking of the new grass greens that will be constructed soon, said this tournament will be known as “Custer’s Last Stand.”
