A last minute bureaucratic roadblock was broken Monday by Congressman Garner E. Shriver, and the House Appropriations Committee approved addition of $100,000 in early construction funds for the Marion local flood protection project.

Capt. Dean A. Klenda, son of Mr. and Mrs. Albert Klenda of rural Marion, has been officially declared as “killed in action” by the United States Air Force. Captain Klenda had been classified as “missing in action” since he was shot down over Vietnam in September 1965.

Clinton “Bill” Ewert of Marion was the big winner in the third annual Marion Lake Fishing Derby on Sunday. He had 895 points and won a $145 “John boat.” Second prize went to Fred Vidrickson of Smolan He won a $65 reel. Third prize, a $29 life jacket vest, went to Mike Ewert, son of the first prize winner.

Throughout the month of June, there will be a display of wood carvings by Mrs. Carl Bass of Marion on public exhibition at Marion Municipal Library.

Additional awards presented to music students at Marion High School include the following: Outstanding musician, Denise Westerhaus; accompanist awards to Janet Ehrlich, Alice Gantz, and Denise Westerhaus; outstanding enthusiasm, Mike O’Dell; outstanding attitude, Pat Robinson. Vocal solo awards went to Barbara Boyle, Claire Fruechting, Joni Kroupa, Denise Westerhaus, Jim Coe, and Jim Richmond.
