It was just a year ago, that cable television service started in Marion. Since then there have been about 300 homes go on the system. On this anniversary, the city is offering free installation to those who are not already enjoying the service.

The Marion area girls’ Medley Relay Team won second place Saturday at the Missouri Valley final at the University of Kansas in Lawrence. Team members are Nancy Kline, Brenda Silhan, Tracy Burkholder and Angela Helmer. The girls were coached and encouraged by Rex Wilson Marion High School track coach.

Marion Kiwanians heard a program on noxious weeds Monday when Roger Hannaford III of the Marion County Weed Department was the speaker.

Elora Robinson emerged the victor in a three-way play-off for first place in the women’s invitational golf tournament June 21 at Marion Country Club. Robinson was in first place, followed by Frances Puryear, Herington, second, and Dayle Unruh of Hillsboro, third.

Eight World War II veterans, members of the I & R Platoon of the 143rd Infantry Regiment, gathered at the Leo and Dorothy Scharenberg farm east of Florence to spend a week together. The platoon was the first American unit to set foot on the European continent during World War II. The old friends had a wonderful week, mostly spent talking, eating and remembering old times—some good, some bad—during their campaign across Italy, France and Germany.
