The City of Marion will hold a celebration May 1 in honor of Maude Thompson who taught in the Marion school district for 44 years. The day will feature a parade and the traditional winding of the May Pole in downtown Marion.

A crowd of about 40 participants sang “God Bless America” at Sunday’s Ground Zero” ceremony. The event, held at noon on the south side of Main Street, was sponsored by Marion Peacemakers. Organizers said they received a congratulatory telegram from Jane Fonda shortly before the ceremony.

The vocal department of Marion High School will present “The Sound of Music” April 30 and March 1 at Marion City Auditorium. The cast will include Penny Burkholder as Maria, Jon Wiebe as Captain Von Trapp, Linda Robinson as Mother Abbess, Cindy Heerey as Baroness Schraeder, and Roger Wilson as Max Detwiler.

Karen Klein, bride-elect of Mike Regnier, was guest of honor at a pottery shower Monday evening in the social room of Eastmoor United Methodist Church. Hostesses were Carol Robertson, Marge Christensen, Donna Fruechting, Dorothy DuVall, and Jean Miesse.

Bill Meyer, publisher of the Marion County Record, was elected president of the Kansas Press Association Saturday at the annual business meeting in Garden City.
