Jack Kerbs, district foreman of the Marion shops of the Kansas Highway Commission is pictured showing a “sign of the times,” the new speed limit marker. The marker will probably be posted all across Kansas after the legislature follows federal guidelines and begins enforcing the 55-mile-per-hour speed limit. Federal law required states adopt the lower speed limit, if they are to share in funds for highway construction.
A county convention of Republican precinct committee members has been called by Harold Wiebe, county chairman, for the purpose of naming a person for the position of country commissioner from the third district. The person named will then be appointed by the governor to fill the vacancy created by the untimely death of Ronald Gaines. Gaines died Sunday at Axtell Hospital, Newton, after a short illness.
A welcome sign Monday was the trickle of water from roofs and downspouts, signaling the end of two frosty weeks when temperatures dropped to below zero. The warm temperatures Monday and Tuesday soon thawed most of the snow cover and ice that had plagued area residents since the first of the year.
Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Darrow this week announced the sale of Aulne Grain Co. to Garvey Grains, Inc. of Wichita. Lloyd and Ellen Darrow have owned and operated the Aulne Grain Co. for the past 23 years, and worked there for Menno Harder for two years prior to that time. They purchased the business from Harder Oct. 1, 1950.
