Marion County Clerk Burnace Powell, 51, and his wife, Jeannie, 52, were killed in a flaming inferno Sunday night near Salina, the result of a two-car accident followed by the crash of a third vehicle.
Memorial Fountain in Marion’s Central Park will be back in operation within a few days. New blue lights arrived this week to replace those broken by vandals earlier this summer. The fountain has been out of operation all summer, due to the costly and destructive “prank.”
The Florence Harvey House has been added to the National Register of Historic Places, according to Congressman Garner E. Shriver’s office. Shriver said the National Park Service had notified him of the move.
Betty Thompson, former deputy county clerk, has been certified as acting county clerk until a new clerk is appointed. She, in turn, has named Jewell Amick as her deputy.
Enrollment drops were recorded in most buildings of the Marion-Florence school district during enrollment Tuesday. The one exception is in Marion Elementary and Bown-Corby schools with a projected enrollment up 12 from last year. Bown-Corby enrollment Tuesday was 120; Marion Elementary 148; Florence Elementary 91, down from 106; Florence Junior High 191, down from 203; and Marion High School 189, down from 208 last year.
