Marion city commissioners, trying to cope with the month-long drought, voted Monday to ask Marion residents to refrain from watering lawns and washing cars. “We’re trying to keep from going to a mandatory shut-down,” Commissioner Larry Loomis said.

Even the clowns couldn’t keep from frowning occasionally as their makeup melted Saturday in the sizzling sun at the July Jamboree. More than 30 clowns participated in the parade.

Ruth Meyer’s “Personality Profile” this week refers to Gus Carpenter, who along with his son, Gerald, operates Carpenter Garage at Cedar Point and run a wrecker service along US-50 between Emporia and Newton.

Mike Kelsey, 12-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Gerald Kelsey is the Marion County Record Player of the Week. Pitcher and catcher for Jackson’s Junior Babe Ruth baseball team, Mike pitched a no-hitter and a two-hitter the past week, throwing a total of 11 strike-outs in 12 innings.

Davey Hett is pictured as he takes to the waves across Marion County Lake Wednesday evening near sunset. It wasn’t long before the young skier had the wood off his feet and rode the churning water barefoot.
