Marion has undergone a facelift lately with three new buildings going up and at least six businesses remodeling or adding to the present facilities. New buildings include the Don Rogers and H.J. Groves Drilling office at 203 S. Third; the Senior Citizen Center, also on S. Third; and Lynn’s Farm Equipment at 601 W. Main.

Paul R. Shahan, 82, retired postmaster and longtime postal employee, died Aug. 26 at St. Luke Hospital following a long illness.

A decade of service to the area through support of St. Luke Hospital will be observed Sept. 11 when members of the auxiliary to Marion County Hospital District No. 1 hold their annual meeting. The auxiliary was organized after the district was organized and purchased the hospital from the order of Catholic nuns who had operated it since 1961.

Mr. and Mrs. Leo Blackman have purchased Schoneman Shoe Store from Mrs. Homer Stenzel. They took over operation of the business Tuesday. Millie Soyez, longtime employee of the store, will remain with the Blackmans.

First prize in the Florence Labor Day parade went to Jessie Seibel’s stagecoach replica entered by the Burns Centennial Committee.

The girls’ volleyball team defeated the faculty team two games out of three Thursday, starting the season on a positive note. High scorers for the girls in the first game were Cindee Miesse, 11, Linda Williams and Sherry Snelling, 7 each, and Jami Shirley and Cindy Heerey, 5 each.
