The traditional election night vigil started early at Marion County Courthouse Tuesday with spectators gathering prior to the 8 p.m. first returns. Reagan, Dole, Glickman, Karr, Westerhaus, Jost, Mueller, and DeForest are declared winners in the county returns.

Jane Vajnar of Tampa is the winner of the Marion County Record essay contest on Freedom of the Press. She will receive a cash award of $35 from the newspaper and her essay will be entered in state competition.

Marion Warriors escaped a fourth quarter threat from St. Mary’s Friday night and boosted their season’s record to 5-3 — enough to assure them a winning season.

Beverly Bezdek, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Valerian Bezdek of Florence, was a member of the Queen’s Court during homecoming festivities at Kansas Wesleyan in Salina.

Eight girls from Marion were among the 27 Cadette Scouts who recently hiked a nature trail at John Redmond Lake near Burlington. Local scouts were Wendy Hett, Leann Snelling, Theresa Wynn, Melanie Druse, Julia Gooding, Kelley Enos, Brenda Smith, and Marcia Gooding.

Winners last week of door prizes at the grand opening of Schoneman Shoe Store under new owners, Peggy and Leo Blackman, include: Bev Cooper, western boots; Delores Spencer, ladies dress shoes; Angie Walz, canvas shoes; Ron Cork, children’s shoes; and Debbie Grady, casual shoes.
