The Ol’ Thing is a year older this week, with this edition completing volume 112. She starts on volume 113 next week, which makes the newspaper 112 years old. It was established in 1869.

Noreen Weems, department for elderly director, reports that all senior center nutrition sites will serve meals five days a week beginning Oct. 1.

Attending a district meeting of Future Homemakers of America officers’ Sept. 9 at Moundridge were Marion officers: Mickey Costello, president; Amy Hett, historian; Melissa Robinson, secretary; Sherry Snelling, activity leader; and Polly Ferrell, adviser.

Gene Winkler and his attorney, Bob Brookens, met with the Marion commission Monday afternoon to present figures for an expanded Goodyear tire service retail store.

Winkler plans to purchase the business, now located in the Cottonwood Valley Saddlehorse Association building on Stadium Rd.

In appreciation of their years of devoted duty to the school district, service awards were presented last week by Ken Vinduska, board president, to Patsy Waner, 10 years; Lois Anderson, 10 years; Ella Winter, 25 years; and Pauline Edmunds, 40 years.

Norma Riggs of Marion has been voted “Woman of the Year” by Marion Business and Professional Women.” Riggs, a 20-year resident of Marion, is head librarian at the city library. She also is organist at Marion Christian Church and has played a key role in PTA fund-raising events and numerous other charitable causes.

It was hard for Marion’s high school football team to sit still on the journey home Friday night. After just defeating Peabody, 12-9, the team was ecstatic. Randy Kelsey’s running combined with a stubborn defense, gave Marion its first victory of the season.
