Marion firemen were busy for three hours Saturday morning fighting a fire at the Donald Hasenbank residence at 802 Sherman. Investigators have not issued a final determination as to the cause of the blaze. No one was injured in the fire which virtually destroyed the home.

An administrative hearing was held this week at Marion City Building by the Kansas Department of Health and Environment, asking Autumn Manor Nursing Home at Florence to show cause why their license should not be suspended. The state’s case appeared to be that the administrator of the nursing home was not running the facility in a professional manner.

Centre Homecoming King Tom Eskeldson got a surprise he hadn’t counted on Friday — two queens. Balloting for homecoming queen came down to a tie between Linda Albrecht and Jackie Nowak for first place.

Television newsman Jack Hicks welcomed visitors at Thursday’s open house of the Railroad Savings and Loan agency in Marion. Welcoming Hicks to Marion were Wayne Thies and Martin Tice of General Business Services and Mayor Peggy Blackman.

The Strassburg/Eastshore community received from 3.50 to 4.00 inches of rain Saturday night and Sunday. The creeks are bankfull and some are overflowing in lower places. Farmers still have much field work to do, but the rain will keep them out of the fields for some time.

First Federal held a Halloween party for Youth Club members. Each child was given seeds in April and asked to grow pumpkins for the contest. Fred and Meggan Silhan grew the largest pumpkin; it weighed 80 pounds. Smallest honors went to Brian and Carrie Wunderlick, shown exhibiting their offering and reminding all that “good things come in small packages.”
