Rachel Keazer, winner of the Marion County Record’s annual holiday season subscription contest, received her $100 gift certificate as first prize and is pictured as she hands it to Marium Webster of Webster Auto Service to pay for repair work on her car.

Second prize, $50, went to Mrs. Roy Hiebert, and third prize, $25, to Herb Wullschleger.

Following action Monday by the Marion City Commission, Marion’s 387 cable television subscribers can expect a four percent increase in monthly rates beginning Feb. 1. A rate hike calls for a $1 increase in the basic rate and another dollar for those with Home Box Office.

Sharon Kroupa, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Edmund Kroupa of Marion, has accepted a position as staff accountant with the public accounting firm Peat, Marwick, Mitchell, and Co. at Wichita.

William R. Carpenter, a native of Marion, and son of Mrs. Randolph Carpenter of Topeka and her late husband, Randolph Carpenter, was appointed administrative judge of the third judicial district this week. He will assume his new duties Jan. 1.

A graduate of Yale University and Harvard Law School, he was in private practice at Marion in the early 1960s.

‘Twas the week after Christmas, and all over town people were taking holiday decorations down. After they recovered from the holiday bash, the next thing they did was throw out the trash.

The city of Marion refuse truck encountered greater quantities of trash than normal on regular rounds Monday and Tuesday. Bill Lucas, pictured, was proficient at tossing trees into the packer truck before the day was over.
