Good news and bad news hit Marion last week when the announcement was made that Ron Cork, administrator at St. Luke Hospital for the past three years, has received career advancement. He has been named by the Lutheran Hospitals and Homes Society as administrator of their 98-bed hospital at Sterling, Colorado, and will move there in March.

Marion’s Jami Shirley went over the 1,000-point mark in her high school career Thursday night with a 17-point effort against Berean Academy. She upped her total to 1,013 Thursday night with a league win over Herington.

Arthur Lewerenz, former Marion businessman and native of Lincolnville, is shown as he is led into court at Topeka Monday after his arrest on 14 felony charges. The charges stemmed from the reported loss of funds in the state welfare department.

Florence Elementary School held a small-scale spelling bee Monday. Greg Tice was selected winner among sixth graders. The class alternate is Greg’s twin brother, Brad.

Lucy Guerra won the seventh grade competition and Chantal Nienstedt was selected the top speller among eighth graders. Brian Dannenfelser was named alternate for both seventh and eighth grade classes.

Jeannette Bentz reigned as queen Friday night at homecoming festivities at Centre High School. The announcement was made following completion of the junior varsity match between Centre and Council Grove. Runners-up were Kelly Jirak, Amy Miller, and Mary Vinduska.

Announced as Banker Award winners at the annual meeting of the Marion County Conservation District Monday night were Kenneth Jost, Hillsboro; Clarence, Anna, and Dean Bartel, Durham; Gene Nelson, rural Burdick; and David Thiessen of Peabody.
