Lucille Britain was elected chairman Monday of the Marion County commissioners. Britain, who lives in Marion and represents District 2, was elected last year. She was the first woman to be elected commissioner. Other commissioners are Charles DeForest and Harold Jost.

An unusual display of art, the work of Hillsboro artist Ethel Abrahams, is being offered at Marion City Library. The display is sponsored by Coterie Club and will continue through February.
The first baby born at St. Luke Hospital in 1986 was Tyler James Smith, son of Steve and Greta Smith of Marion. Tyler arrived at 5:44 p.m. Jan. 7, weighing 6 pounds 14 ounces.
A “wooden Indian” is the newest Marion High School mascot, designed to encourage school spirit at Warrior sporting events. Judy Mills of Florence and Phyllis Enos of Marion spent nearly 100 hours designing and assembling the mascot in secret. The Indian actually has a papier-mâché face and a body filled with polyester.
Van K. Anderson, developer of the Elgin House apartment complex at Marion, died Saturday evening in Colorado.
