Auctioneer Ted Haefner and Skeeter Makovec are pictured on the front page as they call for bids on 113 items at a Christmas auction Thursday night at Marion Municipal Auditorium. Most items were donated by local merchants and ranged from bags of popcorn and peanuts to diamond earrings, a 10-speed bicycle, and a microwave oven.

Featured in this week’s Personality Profile are Herman and Lois Janzen, who have returned to their home county after 16 years of success in rescue mission work in Oklahoma City.

Three area students at Emporia State University received bachelor degrees during fall graduation exercises Dec. 23. They are Claire Lynn Fruechting, business, and Carol Ann Holt and Brenda Jo (Richmond) Soyez, education. All are of Marion. Margaret Ann Wiebe of Hillsboro received a master’s degree in library science.

Wayne Colle, local Farm Bureau Insurance agency manager, recently won a traveling plaque for sales and participation in the agency’s manpower program.

The Marion County Record has sponsored a first baby contest every January since who knows when, but this year the contest had to be dropped because no babies will be born at St. Luke Hospital.
