The rural home of Tom and Gerri Hett was destroyed by fire Friday after lightning came into the house through a television antenna and went to the basement, where fire smoldered in walls for hours. No flames were present when firefighters arrived. As windows were broken, oxygen reached the smoldering walls and caused flames to engulf the home.

Larry Loomis, vice president of Marion National Bank, is featured in this week’s “Personality Profile.”

Liz Holm and Gwen Stucky, Peabody-Burns eighth graders, were trophy winners Wednesday in a Marion County spelling bee at Marion Elementary School. Holm won the bee.

Marion County ambulance crews are busy raising money to purchase two-way pagers. Present pagers are one-way only. New pagers would allow crew members to answer when they are called and thus confirm that they received the message.

Centre High School senior Kathryn Beneke, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Beneke of Lost Springs, has won a $700 scholarship from Lutheran Hospitals and Homes Society of America. She plans to study nursing and will attend either St. John’s College at Winfield of North Central Area Vocational-Technical School at Beloit.
