Groundhog Day, or Candlemas Day, is Feb. 2 of each year. Groundhog weekend activities in Marion will include pancakes served all day Saturday at the Legion. Special entertainment and half-price sales are planned Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. A “groundhog queen” will be chosen Saturday afternoon. Candidates are Jeff Brewer, Larry Lillard, Larry Loomis, Jim McPheeters, Dennis Parks, Larry Reiswig, and Dave Stroud.

Emil Heyland of Peabody received the Goodyear Award at Marion County Conservation District’s annual meeting Monday evening. Banker award winners were Paul Krause of Lincolnville, John J. Funk of Hillsboro, Carrol Logan of Peabody, Raymond Schmidt of Goessel, and Arnold Mueller of Tampa.

Seventeen Boy Scouts participated Monday evening in a Pinewood Derby at the American Legion building. Eric Kline, 8, finished first; Jeremy Schlehuber, 9, second; and Mike Wheeler, third. Wheeler won in the “judges’ choice” design competition. Dale Heidebrecht finished second.
